I am a fresh IB graduate from St. Joseph’s Institution International and will be pursuing a double major in Computer Science and Biology at NUS. I gained an interest in teaching from a young age by tutoring my mother in Chinese. After having more enjoyable ventures as a swimming coach and coding mentor, I was eager to tutor IB subjects after graduating from the IBDP. I was compelled to teach Language and Literature because language is all around us. Lang-Lit is especially useful as it develops academic literacy - preparing students for higher education. I’m Alden, a third-year Political Science and Communications student at NUS. I graduated with a 43 in 2022, with 7s in the two HL subjects I tutor: English Language and Literature, and History. I also teach IB Global Politics! English and History were my favourite subjects during the IB, primarily because of the heuristic analytical acumen that both subjects had. Both were about making and defending your opinion whilst understanding and addressing the other, valid differing perspectives out there – in a world of subjectivity, it’s an invaluable skill applicable to not just higher education, but life. I just happened to choose a degree that revolves around subjectivity. As a tutor, I think personalising the way each student compartmentalises and utilises concepts in these subjects are key.
